OLYMPIC MUSIC FESTIVAL

The cultural events that go on in this area of the Northwest are truly amazing.  For a geographically large area with a very small population it is quite an accomplishment.  One that has been going on in an area between Port Townsend and Sequim is the Olympic Music Festival.

This is held on a sunny and tranquil 55 acre farm in a beautiful area, dense with forest and snuggled under the Olympic Mountains.  The concerts are held in a barn and can also be heard from the grassy knoll.  Tickets range from $18 to $30.  People are invited to bring a picnic lunch and snacks for the outdoor area or you can purchase a box lunch for $13.00.  Atmoshpere and dress is casual on stage and off and music is classical from the most beloved classical composers.

This all began when in 1966 members of the Philadelphia String Quartet moved to Seattle to become the University of Washington Quartet in Residence.  During their 30 year tenure they made numerous tours and recorded the chamber music repertoire.

In 1984 Alan Iglitzin, a group member, founded the Olympic Music Festival.  Since it's opening season, the Festival has grown from three weekends to twelve.  Today more than 10,000 people attend "Concerts in the Barn".  A must for Port Townsend folks, some people come from California and Canada.

This summer's schedule is starting June 27 with Chopin, Schubert and Brahms.  The last perforamance weekend is September 5th and 6th.   These performances can be heard on KING FM and are featured throughout the year on NPR's "Performance Today"

Heart to Hearth in Port Townsend

I love my office and all the agents and staff.  Really a great bunch.  Here is one that is making a difference in our community.  This woman is behind a new program to help people in need in Jefferson County with their winter heat.

Temperatures here can get just below freezing at night and stay that way for a good 3-4 months in the winter.  Jan Marquardt in our office applied to Realtor Magazine Good Neighbor Award for a grant to help out and is one of the finalists to receive $1000 to be used in conjunction with our local aid group, OlyCap which is helping with this program.

The idea is to organize donations of wood from property owners, tree cutters, haulers, stackers, and last but not least,  money.  Wood will be delivered for home heat to those that cannot afford elecric heat or propane.

Jan is a successful realtor who still finds time to help others and a very nice person.  I am so happy to be associated with her.

Port Townsend Bridge Celebrations

Just a short post to show you our joy last night.  Celebrations were held all day, but I was working!  I did make it downtown at 6 pm and took in a bit of the Gallery Walk and enjoyed champagne and fabulous chocolate at William's Gallery.  William was Bill Metzler back at Windermere RE and I knew him when.  Now he and his Jewelry creating wife Wendy have a wonderful gallery packed with treasures from around the world,  showcasing her art.

Chamber Music at Artisans on Taylor.

The main attraction was taking place at Union Wharf and you could not miss it because you could hear the music of The Freddy Pink  band where ever you went.

They really rock and have a great repetois with oldies, but goodies.  There was dancing in the street.

One of our more colorful citizens  (I think she is wearing her Kintectic Sculputure Race outfit) and her wheels.

We are all waiting in line for the great pizza at Waterfront Pizza...was worth the wait.

Inventory Shrinking/Seattle Area

Good news!

The  Northwest Multiple Listing service which serves 19 counties in Western and Central Washington is reporting inventory is shrinking, sales are rising and prices stablizing in some NW MLS areas.  This is good news for us over here on the Olympic Penisnsula because this is where many of our buyers come from, but is also a good sign for all of us.

Pending sales are up by 17.7 percent over a year ago and up 3.5% from April to May.  Active listings are down about 30%  giving buyers less to choose from.

In Bellevue, an upscale suburb of Seattle there are reports of multiple offers in their lower end inventory (around $400,000).  Rural areas are lagging behind the closer in markets, but activity is picking up there too.

It seems Builder inventory is beginning to dwindle and incentives are still available, but not as radical.  Prices are down area wide about 10% from a year ago, but from January they are rising in 8 of the 19 counties and up 2.9 percent in the entire mls.

Area wide, the condo market is still very slow with pending sales down 15% from a year ago.  The demand for high priced homes is also down.

The reason for this photo is that I do not have any good blogging softwear.   I cannot find any good photos and the ones I do have will not stay put.   Any suggestions?

Port Townsend Historic Building

In the category of Port Townsend's most interesting real estate, the Eisenbeis Building also know as the Cracker Factory Building was built in 1889.  (Crackers were baked in building attached.)  Located in Port Townsend's original town-site on bustling Water Street the building was occupied by Delmonico's Hotel and Restaurant, and then later became the home of Olympic Hardware.  I believe the hardware store started in the 50's or 60's and I have been told that up on the 3rd floor you could find any part or gizmo you ever dreamed of.

This wonderful old building was renovated by investors and about 2 years ago, just as the market hit it's peak.  That timing was incredibly unlucky for these investors, but at this point there is one condo sold, and some interest in the retail area.

The building is being marketed today as retail space for lease or sale on ground and mezzanine floors, and condos on floors 3 and 4.  With high ceilings, good window space with water and city views, and beautiful wood flooring, these are very upscale and lovely condos.  Ranging in price from $299,000 to $489,000 which is a considerable reduction in price (50%) of the original prices.  The entire building is also for sale.  Marketed by John L Scott, Port Townsend, but not my listing.

Citizen of the Year

I was recently invited to a dinner honoring the "Marrowstone Island Citizen of the Year".   The honoree, Mr. Phil Flynn has been an acquaintance of mine for a few years, but I had no idea how much he has actually done for our community.  It was a wonderful event and was so glad I went. It was a delicious pot luck organized by the Nordland Garden Club at their club house and  so many people took the mike to give their tributes.  Phil flew his three grown children here for the big event.

Marrowstone Island is a small island in the Admiralty Bay just east of Port Townsend that was settled in the late 1800's by Dutch dairy farmers.  Very rural and wildly beautiful with views of pasture, mountains, small bays and the shipping lanes of Puget Sound, this community is home to relatively  few people.  But the people who live there are devoted to this small town and very greatful to its number one citizen.  The dinner was so well attended, there was SRO and I was squeezed into my seat the entire evening so my photos are not the best.  Here is what I learned about my friend Phil Flynn:

  1. Planning Commission   He spent 7 years on the county planning commission fighting for zoning that would create infrastructure and more jobs.  That is a frustrating and thankless job as many of you know.
  2. Marrowstone Water  He formed an organization  of 16 people with $50,000 who were responsible for bringing public water to Marrowstone Island, needed because of salt water intrusion.  Amazingly half the island's residents were against this and it was a long uphill battle from which Phil never flinched.
  3. County Food Bank He has been in charge of the county food banks for quite a while.  We have at least 4, and he is the head of a large group of volunteers.   Phil organizes the stores, gets grants for purchases, brings in food from the local markets and also does the heavy lifting at the stores.  His best pal, Maggie tells me he is up until 2am doing bookwork for the food banks.
  4. Republican Party Phil has been a staunch supporter of the small group of conservatives in Jefferson County that make up the Repulican Party here, giving of his time and money, showing up for all meetings, fund raisers and political events.

Being a good citizen is not a new thing for Phil.  He has raised a family of four sucessful and delightful sons and daughers, was married for over 40 years until his wife passed away, and seved in the armed forces in the intellignece department.

This 82 year young man is a fine example of an excellent and giving citizen who is still going strong.

Let hear it for Phil!

Memorial Day at Fort Worden, Port Townsend

The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave... Patrick Henry--

Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem.
--Ronald Reagan--

From time to time, the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots.
--Thomas Jefferson-

--

This morning I heard the canon at the fort go off, saluting the veterans buried there.  I drove to the fort to check it out and there was a small gathering of people and I snapped some photos.  Fort Worden is one of three forts on the Olympic Peninsula built in the early 1900's to protect our Northwest border and ports.  On the south west corner of the fort is this beautiful little cemetery with uniform headstones, and today they each had a small flag.

I drive by this little cemetery almost every day, and you can't help but think about the men who gave their lives by serving their country.  I have read at the fort that most of the men in this cemetery died of the 1918 Influenza.  But I am sure there are some real heroes buried there.  I am so greatful to all of our military people who have made the ultimate sacrfice for us.  You cannot appreciate what we have in our country until you have traveled to places like East Berlin as I did  (in the 70's) and seen what an oppressed country is like.

Today Fort Worden is owned by the state and used by Jefferson County and Port Townsend for many wonderful cultural, educational and recreational events.  Fortunately most of the grounds and buildings have been preserved as they were, and it is truly a treasure for all who can visit and make use of the facilities.

Port Townsend Realtors Show Up for Volunteer Work Party

Most of the Realtors in my office (John L Scott, Port Townsend) converged this morning on the home of a sick co-worker to clean the house and yard.  I was amazed and impressed by the turnout which amounted to about 30 people, including some of her neighbors and friends, showing up with brooms, dust pans, windex, weed eaters, and gloves.  Spirit was high and work was fast and furious.

A friend from Port Townsend Brewery brought 4 jugs of their incredible brew and was enjoyed by all.

Much was accomplished while the lady of the house was banished for the morning.  By the time I left things were ship shape and looking good.  Two truck loads of yard waste were hauled to the dump.

10 AM Work started                             A large stack of wood was moved

Grass was cut and weeds were whacked.    Windows got cleaned.

Everyone took a room to clean.             Flower garden was weeded and new flowers planted.
