Sandra White: Americans Moved at Lowest Rate in 40 Years

Americans Moved at Lowest Rate in 40 Years

Last year Americans moved at the lowest rate in 40 years according to figures of the Census Bureau and corroborated by data from the American Moving and Storage Association.  The AMSA finds the trend has continued into 2009.

The Census Bureau has "Geographical Mobility" data and it showed that the moving rate in 2007 was 13.2% and declined to 11.9% in 2008.  This is the lowest rate since the bureau began keeping track of the data back in 1948.

Shipping of household goods was  down by 20% during the first quarter of this year.  Of course this is the result of the real estate market we are experiencing, but also perhaps more people are having to do it themselves.

Kind of a negative post...I am sure there is something positive going on in your market you can share with us.

I just thought that was a very interesting statistic and wanted to  share. We cannot hide from the reality of our economy at the moment.

Sandra - reporting what is happenning is not a negative post. It is just another ingredient in the mess that we are in. But it is interesting, thanks for posting.
