Sandra White: Ground Zero

Ground Zero

I was just going through photos in my camera's memory card and came across some I took on a trip to New York, and wanted to share these.  This was taken at Ground Zero of the World Trade Center.  I was really interested in seeing this, after hearing so much about it.   There is a chain link fence all around it, with a lot of workers inside.

I was struck by the number of people on their way from Wall Street offices to the train during evening rush hour, and no one even glanced at the site.  It apperared that for most of them it has just faded into the background.  That is understandable when you see it everyday, but I hope it never will for the rest of us.

Ground Zero is a very sad and humbling place to see. I think the daily commuters are just immune to it. Unfortunately so is most of our country. We never did tighten our borders or start deporting people. Now we are going to have terrorists residing on American soil.

I worked in Tower 2 before the attacks. My friends who still work downtown can't look at it daily. Too many memories from the loss of their friends or the horrors of seeing people jumping to their death from their windows.

I wish our country didn't forget. Let's hope we are do not receive another "wake-up" call on our soil.

Thank you so much for your input.  I agree with you, and I feel they meant to do so much more damage to those 2 buildings and our country.   I often think about what would have happened without the first responders who were able to get so many people out, and the men in the plane that went down in the Pennsylvania field  that was meant to fly into the congressional building or the White House.  I am afraid we will have to have another incident before we get serious about protecting this country.

I hope that individuals have not forgotten-thanks for making it's presence known again.

Sandra - Unfortunately, we have very short memories.  That's why the political candidates are so focused on the last few weeks prior to an election.  As for NY, I think many would like to forget it, hoping it, and the motivation behind it, will somehow just vanish.  It won't.  I too, fear we'll someday have a more dramatic event on our soil. I hope not, but have little confidence in the ability of our bickering politicians and intelligence services to keep us from harm indefinitely.

John, now that the CIA is accused of lying to congress our intelligence will likely be even more compromised.  Good to hear from you.

The fly over NY did nothing to add confidence to a city already on edge.

Current administration has no regard for the safety of Americans and Pelosi should be tried as a traitor to her country. It's despicable.

Kim, I share your opinion of Pelosi and the current administration.  I can't believe what is going on in our government.

Sandra, It just seems so odd, doesn't it, that people forget so quickly?  Or, is it that people become immune to it all?  I suppose that life marches on...

Cool name you have.  I have always wanted to have a real estate co. called Sandy White Beaches RE.  What do you thinK?

Yes, it did seem sureal to me, to see all those people rushing by on their way to catch their train as if they were walking past a bank or any other building.  I am afraid our country just doesn't want to face what we are up against.

I have only gotten up the courage to go there once since it happened.  The eerieness of it was most unsettling.  Was in and out of that building more than most, but alot less than those who worked there.  One thing did put a smile on my face, the subway that was exposed in the SW corner of the site.  City just keeps on moving.  Skyline will never be the same.

Daniel, thanks for reading and commenting.  I was in New York last May and had not been there since the 60's so I don't remember seeing the skyline with the towers.  I loved the city on my last visit there and would love to go back.  What a fabulous place.
